Five signs your business has outgrown its current connectivity
Slow speeds, dropped calls, and unexplained outages are not just bad luck. They are signs your connectivity is no longer fit for purpose. Here is how to tell for certain.
Most businesses do not decide to upgrade their connectivity. They tolerate it. The broadband has always been a bit slow in the afternoons. The video calls drop occasionally. The card machine took a few attempts last Saturday. These things get absorbed into the background noise of running a business, attributed to bad luck or bad weather, and forgotten about until the next time.
SIGN 1
Your broadband slows down during busy periods
If your internet connection is noticeably slower between certain hours, that is not a coincidence. Standard broadband is a shared resource. When demand on the local network is high, your speeds drop. The afternoon slowdown that your staff have come to accept as normal is a direct consequence of sharing bandwidth with every other business and household on the same exchange.
The fix is a dedicated connection that does not share bandwidth with anyone. A leased line or business-grade full fibre eliminates peak-time slowdowns entirely because the capacity is yours alone.
SIGN 2
You have had unexplained outages in the last 12 months
An outage that you cannot explain is an outage your provider has not explained to you. That means one of two things. Either your provider does not know what caused it, which suggests they are not monitoring your connection proactively. Or they know but have not told you, which is a different kind of problem.
Ask your current provider for an incident report covering the last twelve months. If they cannot produce one, or if the report shows faults that were only identified after you called them, you do not have proactive monitoring. You have a helpdesk.
SIGN 3
Staff complain about slow uploads or dropped calls
There is a stage in every connectivity problem where staff stop complaining and start working around it. They save files locally instead of uploading to the cloud. They switch to their mobile data for important calls. They have adapted, and because they have adapted, the problem has become invisible.
Ask your team directly whether they have changed how they work because of the internet connection. Slow uploads in particular are a sign that your connection is asymmetric. Standard broadband products are designed this way because most household users download far more than they upload. Business users are different.
SIGN 4
Your business has grown but your connectivity has not been reviewed
Connectivity is usually set up once and forgotten. The broadband that was installed when the business had five staff and used one cloud application is still running three years later when there are fifteen staff, four cloud applications, a hosted phone system, and a remote team connecting via VPN.
Not reviewing it is not a neutral decision. It is a choice to keep running a three-year-old solution against a business that has changed significantly since it was installed.
SIGN 5
You do not know who to call when something goes wrong
If your internet goes down right now, how long would it take you to find the right number to call? Do you have a named account manager at your provider, or would you be calling a general support line and starting from scratch with whoever picks up?
The absence of a named contact is one of the clearest signs that your connectivity is unmanaged. A managed service means someone knows your account, knows your setup, and can act immediately when something goes wrong.
WHAT GOOD LOOKS LIKE
None of these signs mean your business is failing. They mean your connectivity has not kept pace with your growth.
At ATN Communications, we start every conversation with a review of what the business actually needs. If your current connection is adequate, we will tell you. If it is not, we will show you what the right solution looks like and what it will cost.
