What is a managed network services and does your business need one?
Managed network services explained in plain English. What they include, what they cost, and how to know if your business has outgrown unmanaged connectivity.
Most businesses do not think about their network until something goes wrong. The broadband drops during a busy period, a video call freezes mid-presentation, or the card machine stops working on a Saturday night. At that point, the network stops being invisible infrastructure and becomes an urgent business problem.
WHAT IS IT
A managed network service explained
A managed network service is a connectivity solution where the provider takes responsibility for the ongoing operation of your network, not just the supply of the connection itself.
At a minimum it should include proactive monitoring of your connection, a defined response time when something goes wrong, and a named point of contact who knows your setup. The distinction from unmanaged connectivity is straightforward. With an unmanaged connection, you get a line. With a managed service, the provider takes ongoing responsibility for making sure it works.
WHAT IS INCLUDED
What a credible managed service should include
Proactive monitoring. Your connection is watched continuously, not just when you raise a fault. The provider knows about problems before you do.
A defined SLA. Not a best-efforts commitment, but a contractual uptime guarantee with a documented remedy if the provider falls short. For a managed leased line this should be 99.98% or above. For managed broadband, 99.5% is a realistic and credible benchmark.
A named account manager. One person who knows your business, your sites, and your setup. Not a ticket number and a call centre queue.
Regular reporting. Monthly performance reports showing uptime, any incidents, and response times. You should always know how your network is performing without having to ask.
Hardware management. Firmware updates, configuration changes, and fault resolution on your routers and network hardware. If the provider only manages the line and not the equipment it runs through, that is a gap worth understanding.
WHO IT IS FOR
Which businesses benefit most
A managed network service is not just for large businesses. It is for any business where connectivity is critical to operations and where downtime has a direct cost.
It is also particularly relevant for businesses without dedicated IT resource. A managed service effectively gives you an IT function for your network, at a fraction of the cost of employing someone to do it internally.
FIVE SIGNS
Signs that your business might need a managed service
You have experienced unexplained outages. If your connection drops regularly and you are not sure why, that is a monitoring problem as much as a connectivity problem.
You do not have a named contact at your provider. If you cannot call someone who knows your account when something goes wrong, you do not have a managed service.
You have no visibility of your network performance. If you cannot tell how your connection has performed over the last month without raising a request, that is a gap.
Your business has grown but your connectivity has not. A connection that was adequate two years ago may not be adequate now.
Downtime has a direct cost. If your network going down costs your business money, the cost of a managed service is almost always less than the cost of unmanaged downtime.
WHAT GOOD LOOKS LIKE
A good managed network service is not a product. It is a relationship.
The provider knows your business, monitors your network continuously, and takes responsibility for making sure it works. At ATN Communications, every connection we deliver is a managed service. Monitoring, reporting, account management, and a contractual SLA are included as standard.
